Imperial College
Walkway, courtyard design scheme
Imperial College, London
The outcome of this brief converted the main college walkway and courtyard into an inspirational, friendly and informative space. This is one of my most successful and rewarding commissions to date in terms of both working with a trusting client on a large scale brief whilst encompassing my strengths of designing functional systems and creating unique illustrations.
Turning problems into creative solutions
One of the main issues for the college was how to deal with the problem of posters appearing in random locations throughout the walkway, making the space untidy and would often be removed. To avoid friction between the college and the students, I conceived that the posters needed to be seen as less a problem and more as a creative opportunity.
At the start of the project, I visited the college shop and observed that notebooks used by science and engineering students had a different purpose to those that I would use as a designer – leading me to think of the scientific / artistic notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. I then realised that large scale prints of open notebooks could be a solution to use, in which posters could be placed on, and over time this build up of posters could act as a collage of college events. At the end of every term the notebook panels would be cleaned for re-use in the next term.

Seating design, courtyard design scheme
Imperial College, London
The second part of the commission referenced shapes from the walkway artworks. The design was both a piece of sculpture and a functional seat. Due to the size of the courtyard, seats could easily be moved around the space, or grouped together.
