Thoughts on design

One thing I have learned about myself is that ideas drive my design decisions. Ideas don’t just come out of nowhere, they take time. The end solution always intriguing me and the magic.

Design has always been an aspect important in my life. In my teens, record covers were equally as important as the music itself, if not more. Design has the ability to transform… to change people’s perceptions and to translate thoughts and ideas into beautiful printed objects and digital experiences.

Good design is about collaboration between people and understanding their needs sharing/vision – it’s not just about one person’s visions, transforming needs into something useful, functional, and beautiful everything i do has to have a purpose, otherwise its just decorative.

In my teens, record covers were equally as important to me as the music itself, if not more so, and I realised then that design has the ability to transform… to change peoples perceptions and to translate thoughts and ideas into visuals that if undertaken with thought and consideration can reach a far greater audience than words alone.

Growing up in an industrial town in the North of England I left with very little qualifications, but with an overwhelming desire to learn how to visualise/interpret how I saw the world. Nine years of visual communication studies culminated in an MA at the Royal College of Art. I initially worked in the RCA CRD Research Studios alongside teaching at St Martins and LCP and was offered a position at Neville Brody Associates but instead established my own design studio - Studio Tonne which has seen me explore many different journeys in the visual world: from…. research, teaching / external examiner at Liverpool School of Arts / to heritage lottery fund…. I have been lucky enough to work with clients such as …. but I value working with smaller clients/a whole range of clients/

Through archives I have been able to tell the story of Brighton Swimming Club.
